Plain and simple…
We sell fresh healthy food & flowers for the good people of Humboldt County.
About
The Farm
Hello! Goose Prairie Farm (GPF) is a regenerative farm in beautiful Humboldt County, Northern California. We care for the soil so that what it produces cares for us. Out of our historic barn farm stand, we sell down-home baked goods baked in our own Goose Prairie Farm bakery, along with fresh local produce, herbs, and vibrant flowers grown here, and fresh fruit sourced healthily from other California orchards.
Us
We are three generations working this corner of heaven: Wade and Linda Binley; Rachel and Brandon Benavidez, whose hands-on expertise keeps everything growing; and 4 energetic grandkids running around mostly chasing the rotating cast geese, ducks, dogs, kittens, Patty the Cow, or Blaze the retired Mustang cow horse.
The Dream
We had a dream: find a beautiful spot near the kids where we could grow things, feeding and managing the soil in both the old ways and the new ways, lovingly tending to the microbiome and the Earth’s innate system of healing. Since we know that “we are what we eat,” we knew that food produced in such an environment would give us our best shot at true health in a world that is increasingly chemically messed with.
To that end, we began with extensive testing: before any planting, we wanted to know - what was deficient? What was overrepresented? We amended with bioactive supplements. Once those were worked in, we chose non-GMO seeds. and started them by hand. We tend the rows daily, pulling weeds and battling bugs, gophers and deer. What we don’t grow here, we source from growers offering the highest quality produce at the most competitive prices that we can find. It takes more time, and it costs more, but it’s worth it!
The Name
“Goose Prairie” is what Hydesville was named 1911 - 1918 before it was renamed Hydesville (for John Hyde, who had donated the land the town was built on). Population 1,118 (2022), Hydesville is a history-rich corner of Humboldt County, famous for old growth redwood groves, cattle production and the Fortuna Rodeo, which began in 1921 in our next-door neighbor town. Hydesville Post Office was opened in 1861, and our own Goose Prairie farmhouse was built in 1860.
